| These photographs document a little-seen aspect of the recovery operations following the attacks of 9/11: the attempt to identify the remains of the victims. Rubble from the WTC was barged to the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island, where it was sifted and searched by investigators. All suspected human remains were then sent to the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner to be identified, if possible, using DNA and other forensic techniques. |
